Alena Seva - Beyond the Peaks

Beyond the Peaks is an ongoing series exploring mountains through atmosphere, light and a restrained, predominantly monochrome palette.

Working primarily with liquid charcoal and watercolor, I approach the landscape not as something to reproduce exactly, but as something to observe, simplify and interpret.

I am particularly drawn to the way mountains appear and disappear through mist, cloud and changing light -- monumental and permanent, yet constantly shifting in our perception.

By reducing colour and detail, the series invites the viewer to experience the landscape through mood, distance and atmosphere.

Rolando Duartes

My abstract paintings are a balance between calculated planning and unpredictable chance, achieved through a unique layering technique.

The works are built up from multiple applied layers; scraping away the upper layers reveals hidden narratives, bringing fragments of the underlying colors to the surface. Throughout the creative process, I maintain a balance between rigorous compositional intent and the relinquishing of excessive control. I sustain a constant tension between abstraction and figuration, allowing chance and control - in the way pigments are applied - to determine the final image.

My abstractions may suggest urban structures, intricate natural environments, or expressions of deep emotion, yet they always actively defy any fixed interpretation or recognizable subject matter.

Alena Seva & Rolando Duartes

Two artists, two distinct ways of observing the world and translating their impressions into painting.

Together, their works create a dialogue between abstraction and landscape, expressive colour and monochrome, while revealing unexpected connections between two very different visual languages.
