My trusted sketching materials

Sketching has always been a dear companion on my artistic journey. It's a way to capture fleeting moments, explore new places, and immerse yourself in the beauty of nature. Today, I'm excited to share with you my essential sketching materials that accompany me on these artistic adventures.

Every artist's toolkit is as unique as their creative journey, shaped by personal preferences, the subjects they paint, and the artistic techniques they embrace. As I share the contents of my own sketching toolkit, remember that yours might differ – and that's perfectly alright.

  1. Portable Palette

At the heart of my sketching arsenal is my portable half-pan watercolor palette from Schminke. My palette is a vibrant spectrum of 24 colors, and while it may seem like a lot, it suits my preference for convenience. Unlike traditional mixing, I prefer to sketch with colors that are almost ready to use, only needing minor adjustments while I paint. This palette is in a constant state of evolution as I experiment with new colors, making it an integral part of my creative journey.

2. Travel brushes

I use travel brushes from Escoda and Leonard. Though I typically paint with just 2 or 3 brushes, I occasionally carry a few extras. These lightweight additions don't take up much space, providing me with some extra options.

3. Sketchbooks

The A5 sketchbook is my pocket-sized companion, always ready and always in my backpack. The larger A4 sketchbook accommodates more elaborate explorations and experiments. They are both from Etchr and both have 100% cotton watercolor paper.

4. Bruch and pencil case

Organisation is key, and my brush and pencil case is a perfect solution. The case holds all my brushes, pencil, eraser and white pen for highlights. The case is from Art-Lifehack.

5. Water cup

A collapsible water cup and an extra water bottle are my trusty companions, ensuring I have a water source wherever I go. My collapsible water cup is from Faber Castell.

6. Sitting mat

For some, a foldable chair might be a must-have for comfortable outdoor sketching. Others, like me, prefer the minimalist approach of a small foldable mat. The one I have is from Decathlon and it’s ultralight and compact.

Whether you're a seasoned plein air artist or new to the world of painting outdoors, know that your sketching toolkit is a personal extension of your creativity. Don't feel compelled to gather every supply listed here – instead, focus on the essentials that resonate with your artistic needs.

What are your favorite sketching materials? Do you have any special tools that always accompany you on your artistic escapades? Feel free to share your thoughts and experiences in the comments below.

Happy sketching! 🎨✏️
